Adventures In Garage Sale Hunting
There comes a time in every person's life where he or she considers hitting a garage sale to find some sort of item or another. This is mainly because we as a human species are exceedingly cheap at heart, for one thing. Also, we've convinced ourselves that what we need is more junk in our lives on a 24/7 basis. Adventures in garage sale hunting, however, will quickly disabuse anyone of the notion that they need more junk.
Whole industries have sprung up on the notion that hitting garage sales is one of the great American pastimes, though why someone would consider a digital sport watch found a garage sale as being similar to finding the Titanic at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean is a question for the ages. At any rate, people's eyes tend to glaze over with greed and lust whenever they spot an open garage with a bunch of stuff in front of it.
So; how does one explain the obsession that leads to an endless Saturday morning drive around many local neighborhoods in search of any sign of garage sale? For those with garage sales on the brain, chances are that not much would be said, because it is such a completely natural activity. Just point that sort of person to the electric guitar for sale, even though that garage activity where the guitar was at has nothing more than lace doilies left.
Never mind that that guitar probably can be bought new just as cheaply these days down at the local department store, which is really saying something about how versatile retail sales can be on occasion. At any rate, one must think of hitting garage sales as being more like going out on one of those old-time African safaris, for instance, complete with bush jackets and pith helmets and beaters to drive all of that garage sale game towards the hunter.
Maybe one has decided that the spare bedroom that's now unoccupied because Junior has gone off to college would make the perfect fitness room and the need for a bit of fitness equipment has now arisen. This is so even when an expensive gym membership was purchased just a few months ago and has been used a grand total of one time, right? That high-tech fitness-room-to-be certainly needs some stuff and the garage sale is the place to get it.
In reality, it hardly makes a bit of difference whether or not we really managed to locate anything of any worth at one of these sales. Instead, we're just like those big game hunters of olden times; we're out for the biggest game we can find, which in this case means maybe a box of old 1970s-era disco music cassettes that we once danced wildly to in our high school days. It kind of thrills us like getting on a roller coaster used to do.
At heart, it really matters little whether we find anything that we actually need at a garage sale. Instead, what really matters is that we're out there looking for our own 'Treasure of the Sierra Madre, ' and we go to great lengths to find that treasure. Usually, it's been looted long ago and we normally find that what we're left holding is not much. But it certainly thrills us with the adventure, right?
